Mayfield to play 2 quarters in preseason opener

They kick off the 2018 preseason with their first game Thursday night at 7 p.m. against the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium.

Tyrod Taylor's great game in the preseason opener in NY gets lost in the media hubbub over No. 1 pick Baker Mayfield and tight end David Njoku's big nights.

No. 2 overall pick Saquon Barkley made a splash in his National Football League debut Thursday night. He also carried the ball three times for 13 yards. He then almost found controversial rookie Antonio Callaway, in the lineup only days after receiving a marijuana citation that he didn't immediately inform the Browns of, on a deep shot that Callaway couldn't locate.

The second of those scampers - a 5-yard, red-zone dash on fourth-and-2 - set up Mayfield's 10-yard touchdown toss to David Njoku.

It was all so familiar for Sooners fans and novel for Clevelanders.

It was a good drive for Mayfield and the Browns.

Rookie Baker Mayfield may have put together a solid outing by completing 11-of-20 passes for 212 yards, and a pair of touchdown passes, Taylor looks to have further strengthened the confidence in him from the coaching staff.

Barkley had four more carries, which only resulted in four yards gained, after his big play.

QB controversy in Cleveland? Taylor will start under center, though not expected to stay in the game long. An early star of HBO's Cleveland edition of "Hard Knocks", he'll have his first live-game shot at flashing his No. 1-caliber athleticism.
