North Korea's Kim Jong Un understands that denuclearization must happen "quickly", US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Thursday, warning there will be no sanctions relief for Pyongyang until the process is complete.

North Korea will not get any sanctions relief until it has demonstrated "complete denuclearisation", US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said.

Moon appeared to be referring to Trump's surprise pledge to halt joint military exercises with South Korea, which the US president called a "provocation" of the North. "President Obama said that North Korea was our biggest and most unsafe problem".

In the joint statement from the summit on Tuesday, the USA and the DPRK said they would commit to establishing a new relationship, and that the DPRK would work toward denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, while the United States commits to providing security guarantees to the DPRK.

In exchange, the United States pledged to make unspecified "security guarantees" and stop joint military exercises with South Korea.

Tokyo has reacted with concern at Trump's surprise announcement that military exercises with South Korea are to be halted, saying that such drills are "vital" for East Asian security.

"They can see a propaganda value here and this is basically them showing the level of deference and respect that Trump has paid to them and to their military leaders", Kirby said.

The youthful North Korean leader has never visited Russia, unlike his father, Kim Jong-Il, who travelled to the country in his armoured train in 2011 for talks with Dmitry Medvedev, Russia's president at the time.

"Major disarmament... We're hopeful that we can achieve that in the two and half years", he stated, adding that there is "a lot of work left to do".

Pompeo also stressed that there will be no lifting of sanctions, or any kind of economic benefits given to North Korea, . before its complete denuclearization.

Kirby said the appropriate thing for Trump to do in that situation would have been to nod his head and shake the general's hand.

It was only at a rescheduled high-level meeting on June 1 that the two Koreas agreed to hold the military talks on Thursday.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday morning declared an end to the North Korean nuclear threat.

In Washington on Wednesday, Trump, back from his first encounter with Kim, hailed the Singapore summit as a major win, declaring the DPRK no longer poses a nuclear threat.

"Regardless of the smiles in the summit many in Japan, South Korea and the U.S. Congress doubt that North Korea is honest in its intentions", the report states.

As an "important party", China offered to assist North Korea and the U.S. in further talks and in implementing decisions made at the summit.

The president is correct that there are families still calling for the remains of their relatives who fought and died in the Korean War to be returned to the US.
