Iran, Syria, energy: What's in store for Putin-Merkel summit in Sochi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin will primarily focus on pressing global and regional issues, including impact of the USA withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal, during their informal summit in Russian city of Sochi on Monday.

The Russian leader said the military successes have created suitable conditions for the resumption of the political process in Syria. At the invitation of Russian President Putin, Modi will visit Russia on May, 21 wherein the two leaders will exchange views on worldwide matters in a broad and long-term perspective with the objective of further strengthening the "Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership".

Putin congratulated Assad on what he said were considerable achievements by the Syrian armed forces against terrorist units.

Russian Federation launched an air campaign on behalf of President Bashar Assad in 2015, helping to turn the tide of the war in his favor.

"The next task, of course, the economic recovery and humanitarian aid for those people in a hard situation", Mr Putin added. The United Nations has hosted several rounds of peace talks in Geneva that have made no progress toward ending the conflict.

Russia's weapons export increased in 2017 in spite of sanctions, CEO of Russia's Rostec State Corporation told President Vladimir Putin on Thursday.

"We know it will not be easy because some countries do not want stability to return to Syria".

He thanked the Russian military for playing an important role in the fight.

De Mistura, speaking Wednesday to the UN Security Council's monthly meeting on the Syria conflict, described what he called the classic Syrian regime tactic of a bombardment of a rebel territory followed by negotiations and then mass evacuations from the defeated area.
