The driver of the Tesla Model S that crashed while on Autopilot mode on May 11 in Utah admitted that she was looking at her phone when the accident happened.

The woman broke her right foot, Winkler said, while the truck driver was checked for whiplash but not hospitalized.

After a Tesla autopilot crash in March resulted in the driver's death, the company issued a series of lengthy statements blaming the victim for "not paying attention".

Tesla's cars are equipped with radar, cameras, and computers that can enable the Autopilot to assist the driver.

While there is still a debate over what has actually caused the accident - man or machine, it is worth mentioning that the driver has suffered only a broken ankle.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk sent an email to employees on Monday morning stating that the company is reorganizing in an effort to flatten management structure and improve communication.

Musk added: "What's actually fantastic about this accident is that a Model S hit a fire truck at 60mph and the driver only broke an ankle".

The US Transport and Safety Board are now investigating a total of four crashes, that involve the electric auto company's vehicles in California and Florida.

Last week, the NTSB started probing an incident where a Model S caught fire after a crash, killing two people. In that crash, three 18-year-old boys were killed, and one was injured.

Tesla said its autopilot system is unlikely to have been a factor in the crash, but it marks the agency's fourth active investigation into crashes of the company's electric vehicles. A driver was behind the wheel of the test vehicle in that case but failed to halt in time.

While driverless technology is expected to make the roads significantly safer by reducing human error and crashes, companies like Tesla are now in a transition period that some experts say has created unique risks.

The recent line stoppage took place only a few days after CEO Elon Musk took the hit personally for "excessive automation" - Tesla's too reliant on robots, in other words.
