Eight-division boxing champion Manny Pacquiao said he has not made a final decision on who will be his head trainer in the wake of rumors about firing long-time coach Freddie Roach.

Koncz, apparently without consulting his client, last week told ESPN: "Buboy Fernandez [an old friend of the fighter] will be handling the training on this fight".

"I would be lying if I didn't say I wasn't hurt that he didn't contact me personally about his decision", he said, "but the great times we enjoyed together far outweigh that".

The senator said he plans to make decision this week on his head trainer for his upcoming fight with Argentina's Lucas Matthysse, adding Roach would have the first crack of any news.

Roach was an ever-present in Pacquiao's corner during his rise to the pinnacle of his sport, helping mould the fighter into one of the best boxers in history.

With this latest news, it's safe to say that Roach has gotten his answer.

He said Pacquiao's business manager Michael Koncz informed Roach's assistant in a phone call saying "don't believe everything that you read".

"Manny and I had a great run for [16] years - longer than most marriages and certainly a rarity for boxing", Roach said.

In 2001, Pacquiao, then a former flyweight world titleholder unknown to all but the most ardent boxing fan, arrived in Los Angeles looking for a new trainer. I wouldn't trade any of it.

Matthyse will be accompanied by promoter Oscar Dela Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions when he arrives in the country on Wednesday for the start of the two-city press tour that will also take both fighters to Kuala Lumpur on Friday.

There have been numerous reports suggesting that Pacquiao had split with his long-term trainer Freddie Roach in recent weeks, however, Pacquiao has not confirmed the split or if Roach will be in his corner, leaving the pair's future in doubt.

It is widely thought that 2018 will be the final time Manny Pacquiao steps into the pro boxing ring.

Matthysse, robust and rowdy, wants to send the Filipino legend into retirement in a story that appeared on boxingscene. "We have assembled the biggest fight card Malaysia has been waiting for in the last 43 years since Ali-Bugner".
