There are only two things we know for certain about tonight's episode and that's that it centers around Toby and Kate's wedding and that fans will see an older Jack. Toby has often had to be the strong and supportive one.
In an equally wrenching scene, Rebecca recalls the first day she ever met Jack - remember back in the season one finale when she was singing in that bar? - and then pays tribute to that moment with a lovely rendition of "Moonshadow", the same song she was singing on the day Jack first set eyes on her. Jack tears up, and so do I, and so does everybody. They talk about how he was severely depressed after his first marriage broke down. Earlier in the episode Toby's parents pleaded with him not to marry Kate since she was a hot mess; that his first wife drove him to a dark depression when she left.
But while Deja has regressed, this week featured plenty of growth for the rest of the Pearson family, and the main four specifically. Or do you think this is what she wants, this partnership?
Sophomore seasons are hard, especially for a family show like this that doesn't have a basic story engine the writers can rely on to keep things going even when individual character arcs are in trouble. She tells her how her mom dumped her off at Beth's house when she was young. She hangs up and takes Jack's urn to their favorite tree stump.
Randall has other things going on: He's still reeling from the dramatic turn of events involving Deja from last week's episode; she's now irritable and closed off, an obvious result of her mother's official decision to "terminate all parental rights" and leave her in Randall and Beth's care.
At the wedding, Beth's cousin Zoey is the photographer. She even goes as far as to say that Deja looks exactly like Randall.
"Like Kate, it is unconventional, emotional, and unexpected", Metz told Entertainment Weekly.More news: 'Queer Eye' contestant Tom Jackson gets engaged to ex-wife Abby

Beth's cousin, the wedding planner, sees Deja on the bridge. Beth's parents raised her. He toasts about not knowing what the future holds or being able to control it but being able to control who you spend it with. Kevin meets Beth's handsome, smart and wise cousin Zoe at Kate and Toby's wedding. Earlier in the episode, there was a beat when we thought he could potentially hook up with Kate's maid of honor Madison (Caitlin Thompson). We see them together on a plane, and Kevin is holding a photo of Jack and his brother during the war.
It's wedding day! Kate decides at the last minute to go to an ice cream shop she and her dad used to go to. This should promise a lighter and brighter future for her, as she fully commits herself to the new love of her life, the man her father said would be better than him.
They were both not ready to see "her" leaving fans to speculate about the person's identity. But before the summer sun can dry our Season 2 tears, there's still time to revel in the bittersweet season finale. Fogelman says of her work, "I think she deserves to be sitting in the category with our fanciest actresses who were doing work on TV right now..." I don't get to work with Jon Huertas, who plays Miguel, very much, and contrary to what people think, he is so lovely and he's just so much fun. For answers on why old Jack was seen in the finale, read our recap.
"In true [creator] Dan Fogelman [fashion], as well as the rest of our writers - we have the most wonderful writers on our crew - they have built this attractive idea of giving the audience an aged version of Jack", Ventimiglia said before the This Is Us Season 2 finale. Do you think Toby's parents are right about Kate being unstable? The only family member who seems to be affected the most by Deja's absence at the function is Tess, whose anxious expression is quite telling.
Bear with us. We know we've seen Jack's body lying in the hospital - well, a blurry image from afar of Jack's body.
