Goldstein said Tillerson had planned to stay on and that act of publicly contradicting the administration's account got Goldstein fired, reported NBC News, citing an unnamed White House official. Trump cited the Iran nuclear deal in particular: "I think it's awful, he thinks it's okay". "And I think the president doesn't feel that's helpful anymore". I wanted to either break it or do something, and he felt a little bit differently.
He praised allies in noting "we exceeded the expectations of nearly everyone with the DPRK maximum pressure campaign", and said that "much work remains to establish a clear view of the nature of our future relationship with China". Tillerson's successor is more likely to be in sync with the Oval Office.
Videotapes of the interrogations were destroyed on the orders of a cable drafted by Haspel and agreed to by her former boss, then-CIA director of counterterrorism operations Jose Rodriguez.
When announcing the new appointment, Trump said that he had "chemistry" with Pompeo, whom he praised for his "tremendous energy" and "tremendous intellect". White House officials disputed that notion, and promptly fired Goldstein.
Mr Rex Tillerson spent a tumultuous year at the helm of the US State Department, frequently undercut by the President he disagreed with on key foreign policy issues and derided by many of his employees, who blamed him for marginalising their role and diplomacy itself.
In his goodbye address, Tillerson pointed to progress on North Korea, Afghanistan, and Syria as some of his accomplishments and thanked his State Department colleagues, as well as Pentagon officials and members of the military, for the "privilege" of serving with them. Among the six Under Secretary roles, four have been vacant, a fifth now is open with Goldstein's firing, and the sixth is filled by career diplomat Tom Shannon, who announced last month he is retiring.
After the Tillerson announcement, Trump said on Tuesday that it "sounds to me like it will be Russia based on all the evidence they have", and that the United States will condemn the Russians if the British present sufficient evidence.

Trump has named Mike Pompeo, the director of the CIA, as his next pick to lead the State Department, with Deputy Director Gina Haspel slated to lead the agency. He will do a fantastic job! He also complimented Tillerson for "his commitment and his service, and I wish him well".
Former Wichita Congressman Mike Pompeo is poised to be the next US secretary of state.
A graduate of West Point, Pompeo served in the U.S. Army from 1986 to 1991. Prior to that, he served six years in Congress representing Kansas.
"As Director of the CIA, Mike has earned the praise of members in both parties by strengthening our intelligence gathering, modernizing our defensive and offensive capabilities, and building close ties with our friends and allies in the global intelligence community".
"With Mike, I've had a very good chemistry right from the beginning", Trump said Tuesday.
"He will continue our programme of restoring America's standing in the world, strengthening our alliances, confronting our adversaries, and seeking the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula".
"His experience in the military, Congress, and as leader of the Central Intelligence Agency have prepared him well for his new role and I urge his swift confirmation". CIA Deputy Director Gina Haspel will succeed him, also following Senate confirmation.
But Pompeo is seen as backing the president's view that the defense of American interests requires the U.S.to take a tough stance against global rivals.
