Karti, son of former union minister P Chidambaram, is accused of accepting money from INX Media in 2007 and 2008 in exchange for facilitating foreign investment approvals for the INX Media group, using the influence of his father, who was then Union finance minister. Karti's plea was that since his father dealt with various stringent penal laws like TADA, MCOCA, UAPA (Unlawful Activities Prevention Act) and NDPS (Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) Acts and many of these prisoners are facing prosecution under the same laws, he may face a threat from them.

Observing the counsel's submission, the court said that the apprehension raised by senior counsel of the accused can not be ignored keeping in view his social status, but more specifically, due to his father's, who is former a Union Minister.

The CBI has sought 15 days judicial custody of Karti who in turn has asked the court to hear his bail plea today itself instead of scheduled March 15.

The Delhi court ordered the jail authorities to ensure that adequate security is provided to Karti Chidambaram until March 24.

"However, only keeping in view the fact of social status of accused and his father, he can not be treated different from other accused persons and can not be allowed to be kept in separate prison".

Karti Chidambaram was produced before Delhi's Patiala House Court on Monday after his three-day CBI custody ended.

"During the entire period of police custody remand, Karti Chidambaram was evasive and non-cooperative". The counsel also sought a separate cell in case Karti was sent to judicial custody.

Reacting to the probe agency's submission, defence counsel said that there is serious apprehension of threat to Karti Chidambaram's life as CBI is opposing his plea seeking security arrangements in Tihar Jail. "Some of the accused related to those cases are lodged in Tihar so I apprehend a great threat to my security", he said.

Special CBI judge Sunil Rana allowed Karti, who was arrested in the INX Media case, to carry his medicines, after the jail doctor clears it, and his spectacles, while rejecting his plea to have home food, toiletries and books. "He be produced on March 24", the special judge said.

After confirming that she had paid a bribe to Karti Chidambaram in the INX Media case, Indrani Mukerjea has now agreed to identify the location too.
