Vikas Barala was on Thursday granted bail by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in the Chandigarh stalking case, ANI reported.

"The bail of Vikas Barala has been approved by Justice Lisa Gill", Barala's counsel Vinod Ghai said here.

Her cross-examination was held in the district court on January 9 and yesterday.

Speaking to NDTV in August past year, Ms Kundu had said she would like to see a change in the status of women in India.

In addition, Varnika quashed the defence's contentions that her father V S Kundu, who is a senior IAS officer of Haryana cadre, exercised persistent pressure on the police to fabricate evidence and implicate Vikas and Ashish.

Kundu accused Vikas, the son of a senior BJP leader, and his friend Kumar of following her auto in the middle of the night in Chandigarh. During the 25-minute chase, the SUV pulled up close to her auto several times and even tried to block her way, Kundu had said in her complaint.

His petition for bail was dismissed four times by the trial court. Subhash Barala promised co-operation of his son in the police probe and several pleas were made but a trial court rejected their plea for bail four times until he was finally given bail.

Charges were framed against Vikas Barala and his 27- year-old friend, Ashish Kumar, in connection with the case, which had triggered widespread outrage and a spate of protests across the country.

The men were arrested following her complaint but released on bail as they were booked under bailable sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Motor Vehicles Act.
