Toyota's Entune 3.0 system debuted on its 2018 Camry and Sienna models previous year and Lexus' version showed up a couple of months later on RC, LS, and LC models. The new Lenovo Smart Display sports 8 Inch and 10 Inch sizes. Smart displays are essentially speakers with tablet-like displays that can play music, control your smart home and provide visuals as well.

CES 2018 has been home to a ton of different announcements, but one trend that's been more prevalent than ever is the integration of virtual assistants in a variety of smart home gadgets. Also similar to what Alexa does with skills, Google Assistant is adding something called Actions that are voice commands to perform specific functions that can be carried out towards connected apps and bots.

With Google bringing its Assistant to smart displays (not to mention more TVs), it's obviously chasing Amazon's own Echo Show assistant in a major way.

The Smart Display runs Android Things OS, which is separate from the interface you would use on an Android tablet or smartphone.

The displays are powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 624 microprocessor. In the future, it's plausible people could use Alexa for searches instead. Some could only be controlled by Alexa from another device, but most had some version of the voice assistant built right in. Instead, these devices will come with better microphones and speakers.

What is more exciting to hear is that Amazon has expressed its intentions to extend the Alexa technology to wearables and fitness devices and beyond. This will enable the assistant to work with its newest infotainment platforms.

Google Assistant has always been playing catch-up to Amazon's artificially-intelligent (AI) digital assistant Alexa. We would get to see some more smart displays from various giants in the coming days. The 720p camera means whoever you're calling can see you as well.
