DNA evidence connected Woodward to Bernstein's death, said Undersheriff Don Barnes.

The body of Bernstein (pictured), a 19-year-old sophomore at the University of Pennsylvania, was found on Tuesday at Borrego Ranch Park in Southern California. Bernstein's body was found Tuesday in the brush along the perimeter of Lake Forest's Borrego Park after he had been missing for a week.

On Thursday, investigators said they had in connection with the case.

Investigators said Woodward's story had inconsistencies, which prompted authorities to consider him a person of interest. He also had dirt under his fingernails and scratches on his hands, which he attributed to having participated in an outdoor fight club with some friends.

Update: Authorities announced an arrest Friday in connection with Bernstein's death.

Police said they arrested Woodward at 1:15 p.m. local time on Friday and said they believe Woodward picked up Bernstein at his home and drove to multiple locations before they arrived at Borrego Park on January 2.

"With his death, a attractive light has been extinguished and we encourage you to continue to shine his light, through acts of loving kindness", the family said in a statement read by attorney Annee Della Donna.

During a meeting with authorities earlier this week, police say Woodward put his jacket over his hand so that his bare skin would not touch any part of the doors he opened and closed on his way out of the police station. But, the affidavit says, while he had told investigators that he went to his girlfriend's home after he left Bernstein in the park, he said he could not remember her last name and did not know where she lived.

'Nothing will bring back my son so we ask the world to please honor Blaze's memory by doing an act of kindness today - don't wait - do it now. Celebrate the goodness that still exists in this world in-spite of these acts of senseless evil.

Bernstein went missing after he and a friend reportedly met up that night and later drove to the park near Foothill Ranch, about 50 miles southeast of Los Angeles. It will never bring back my son. "People are good and Blaze knew that", she said.

Bernstein's body was found next to the school, his mother said.

Pictured is another view of the park. He had on a sweatshirt that read, "Keep the peace".

According to the OC Sheriff's Department, Woodward was the last person in contact with Bernstein before he disappeared.

At Penn, he worked at Kelly Writers House, a center at Penn for creative writers and artists, and was on the editorial board for the Penn Review, the university's literary magazine, and was managing editor of the student-run food magazine Penn Appétit. The friend said Bernstein had complained about his grades in school and "seemed depressed but never said anything about wanting to hurt himself".
