But Hohns last week said Maxwell's recent ODI output had been unsatisfactory, while Australian skipper Steve Smith pointedly called on the allrounder to "train a little bit smarter".
The omission of Maxwell from the initial squad last week came as a shock to some commentators and it was speculated he would earn a recall when Lynn was ruled out of the series against England because of a calf injury.
As soon as the news spread around, players and pundits thought Maxwell would be a shoo-in, especially considering that Lynn had taken his spot on the roster.
He has carried that form into the BBL, where he has smashed two fifties in his last three innings for the struggling Melbourne Stars. "They're [the selectors] rewarding him on performance, and I think that's great". "We get along really well, we've got a good friendship", Maxwell said.
The selectors, led by Trevor Hohns, also made a decision to rest paceman Josh Hazlewood from the opening ODI while fellow pacer Pat Cummins will skip the second game as Australia look to manage the workload of their fast bowlers ahead of the Test tour of South Africa.
Given the impact and the form he has maintained throughout the Australian summer thus far, it seems weird why Maxwell was snubbed.More news: OnePlus 5T Lava Red Edition Launched in India: Price, Specifications, Release Date

White's return to the ODI squad comes almost three years after his last worldwide appearance for Australia, during the triangular series played along with England and India.
The pair are yet to clear the air but Hohns on Thursday said White's form in the Big Bash had been impossible to overlook.
I'm not saying Maxwell is the flawless cricketer, but the numbers don't lie, and weigh heavily in his favour.
But the national selection panel opted for Maxwell's Victoria teammate White as Lynn's replacement and he will link up with the Australia squad ahead of Sunday's opening fixture at the MCG.
White has been one of the premier performers in the BBL, sitting second on the run scoring charts with 285 at an average of 142.5.
