Ventura, Calif. - Southern California has felt yellow wind, orange wind, and red wind. Wind gusts are expected to reach 80 miles per hour in some spots, with humidity under 10%.

Eric Garcetti, Mayor of Los Angeles said "inroads" had been made by Fire Services, but warned it was still a volatile situation. "We've never used purple before".

But the hard-won progress of firefighters could be erased Thursday.

"There will be no ability to fight fire in these kinds of winds", Pimlott said.

Authorities are dealing with four major fires, as well as a smaller one in San Bernardino, which is 100 percent contained, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

"Extremely dry conditions and Santa Ana Winds will continue to elevate fire danger", Cal Fire said in a tweet.

Melissa Rosenzweig, 47, was briefly back home Tuesday after evacuating from her Ventura house, which has been spared so far while most on her street had burned in the largest and most destructive of the region's fires. Australian police even issued a warning about Apple's lousy maps by saying they could get people killed.

"Heck yeah I'm still anxious", Rosenzweig said.

At the Getty, spokesman Ron Hartwig said they "feel confident we've done everything to protect the Getty and the art collection here".

At an afternoon press conference, city officials sounded a more optimistic note than recent days, saying that the majority of residents evacuated from homes near the three fires would be soon allowed home. The blaze had been creeping there already, but an increase in winds pushed it close enough for many more to flee. Ten years ago, as a series of similar fires raced across Southern California, a blaze in Fallbrook injured five people, destroyed 206 homes and burned 14 square miles (36 square kilometers).

It was unclear how much damage had been done to the 86-year-old's vineyard, or how much wine had been lost. Parts of the 405 freeway, which carries up to 400,000 vehicles a day, were temporarily closed on Wednesday.

Southern California is fighting off a renewed onslaught from the wildfires menacing greater Los Angeles, forcing thousands of evacuations, shutting down schools and highways and leaving the region on edge.

"Honestly, the firefighters are taking a beating, but we have to acknowledge the residents because they're taking a beating, too, but they're cooperating with our orders", said Thomas Kruschke, spokesman for the Ventura County Fire Department.

Helicopters dropped water on the hillside above the orchard for more than an hour, two working in tandem: As one dropped a load and swung south to refill in Lake Casitas, the second could be seen in the near distance.
