"The source suggested that Paddock may have lost his nerve or simply changed his plans and checked into the Mandalay Bay Hotel on September 28", the Daily Beast reports.

A senior law enforcement source whom Daily Beast did not identify told the publication that Paddock, 64, of Mesquite, Nevada, "might have originally targeted another Las Vegas music festival held the previous weekend".

This year's Life Is Beautiful lineup included Chance the Rapper, Lorde, blink-182, Pusha T, Haim, Schoolboy Q, 2 Chainz, Gorillaz, Vince Staples, Bill Nye, and many more.

At a news conference Tuesday afternoon, Las Vegas Sheriff Joe Lombardo said he could not confirm whether Paddock had eyed the Life is lovely concert prior to his attack on concertgoers. Though final 2017 attendance numbers haven't been released, last year's edition drew an estimated 137,000 people.

Paddock was reportedly "immediately" stopped by security when he arrived at the Ogden.

On Monday, the world was rocked by the news of a shooting in Las Vegas that has, at the time of writing, left 59 people dead (including the perpetrator), and a further 530 injured. A bump stock makes the weapon capable of firing hundreds of rounds per minute by allowing the rifle's body to slide a short distance back and forth without the operator having to move the trigger finger.

It's possible that Las Vegas mass murderer Stephen Paddock was considering targeting the "Life is Beautiful" concert with Lorde and Chance the Rapper instead of the country music festival where he eventually struck, according to The Daily Beast and comments made by the Las Vegas sheriff.

The victims were among 22,000 attending the Harvest 91 country music festival.
